Cool! So you’ve made it to SJDS! (Check my other post, San Juan Del Sur – How to Get There). Now what??? This place has something for everyone! No matter your personality or interests… I recommend trying everything on the list! So without further ado….. Here are all the must do’s for your trip to the amazing San Juan Del Sur!
This place is surfer’s paradise. Whether you’re a pro or just getting started, the waves are rideable for surfers of all levels!! When I started at the beginning of the week I was on a big foam board… but by the end of it (and after very sore muscles) I had improved so much and was able to take the short board out! So keep at it and you’ll see a huge improvement in just a few days!! Also the water is soooooo warm, so no wet suit required! A rash shirt would come in handy though…
Tree House Yoga
So you’ve just finished a day full of surfing… aka half a day of surfing and half a day of getting tossed around. And now you’re sore, thinking “shit, this is what happens when I don’t exercise my back or shoulders and go out paddling around the ocean for 5 hours…” Well not to worry! Stretch it out and relax those muscles in an amazing tree house yoga session! Zen yoga is located in “downtown” San Juan del Sur and have English speaking instructors! When I saw this place my jaw nearly hit the floor. It’s so beautiful and serene.
Sunday Funday is the best party in Central America. This legendary pool-hopping/hostel hopping party happens every Sunday and is a must do when in SJDS. Meet tons of travelers (A lot of Canadians surprisingly…) and check out all the different hostels.. and their pools. Listen to amazing music and drink some local beer! For more information on Sunday Funday, comment down below or stay tuned for an upcoming post!
Go on a Catamaran
These Catamarans are a seriously fun time. Spend the day on a big beautiful boat with all the drinks you could want and great music. Cruise along the coast and watch the dolphins swim and jump up alongside, trying to play with the boat. The catamaran will take you to a private beach where you can jump off the boat and swim into the sandy shore. Boat back at sunset and enjoy the insane colours that you get at this beautiful west coast town.
Dinner on the Beach
Speaking of sunsets, you’ll want to soak up every sunset you can while you’re there. I have never seen anything like it, the sunsets are out of this world. What’s one good way to enjoy the sunset? Sitting on the beach, with good food and a couple cold Toña’s (the local beer there). There’s a couple restaurants that have dining right on the beach, so make sure you check those places out at least once while you’re there.
This is another fun activity I did during a sunset, but obviously you can go anytime. Stand Up Paddle-boarding (SUPing) is a great work out, especially when you’re in the ocean fighting back some waves. What’s especially cool about SUPing here is there are dozens of super old school fishing boats anchored out in the bay and you can paddle right up to them and check them out.
Check out this cool Smoothie Bar
Simon Says Smoothie Bar is a little hidden gem in SJDS. This town is filled with cool, unique shops and restaurants but this place is worth noting! Simon Says makes the most delicious smoothies made with fresh, real fruit. BUT what makes this place extra cool is the hidden outdoor back patio/garden. Definitely make a pit stop here and take some time to enjoy your delicious smoothie!!
Choose Between a Cool Hostel and a Beautiful Villa
The last thing you need to do is decide between one of the amazing hostels or an affordable but gorgeous villa. This will probably more likely come down to how many people you’re traveling with. If there is 3 or less of you, I would recommend a hostel. Full disclosure, we stayed at a villa, so my following hostel recommendation is strictly based off what I saw from Sunday Funday. The second hostel we went to during Sunday Funday was the Naked Tiger Hostel, and I actually could not believe how stunning this hostel was. First of all its huge! Second of all if on top of a cliff which gives you an INCREDIBLE view over the greenery, the city and the gorgeous ocean.. amaaaazing spot to watch the sunset. And last but not least it has a massive pool right on the edge of the cliff so you can enjoy the view while cooling off in your own pool! So yeah pretty awesome. The cons to this hostel however is that its relatively far from the town, and its up on top of a very steep hill.. from my understanding they have shuttles (aka pick up trucks) that will take you to and from town everyday.. so you should be fine!
Now option number 2: Is to stay at a villa. Normally I wouldn’t ever recommend this but SJDS is such a great spot spot for a girls/boys trip and the villas are soooooooooo cheap here that it can’t be something that you don’t consider! If there is 4 or more of you I would DEFINITELY look into a villa! Use VRBO.com to look through all your options!
