I was hanging out in my hostel in Peru when the conversation came up, “Do you typically gain weight or lose weight while you travel?” I was so surprised to hear every person around the table laugh and say “Oh I for sure gain weight while I travel”. This is something that the majority of people struggle with… but with a couple of simple and easy tricks, you don’t have to! I have broken my tips down into 2 main categories, Eating and Exercising! So check out my top tips below and let me know what you think! If you have any tips to add let us know in the comments below!
1. Cook your meals!
Make sure your entire trip isn’t spent at hotels. Mix in a hostel or Airbnb with a kitchen (if not staying at one your entire trip) a kitchen won’t only save you SOO much money but will also allow you to cook your own healthy and delicious meals.
2. Buy Tupperware
This one goes with the one above. It’s so silly how we meal prep at home but not while we are traveling! Make a big healthy dinner and pack up any extras to bring with you the next day for lunch! Your wallet and your tummy will thank you!
3. Don’t indulge when you are eating out
If you go out for dinner and would normally substitute fries for some vegetables then it should be no different when you are traveling! Don’t over indulge just because you are on vacation. If you go to an amazing one of a kind restaurant one night, then yesssss eat your heart out but don’t make it a habit!
1. Walk Everywhere!
This one is easy because you are already going to do this. Change your fitbit goal from 10k to 25k and make sure you hit it every day! Trust me, I’m only saying it because it is totally do able! And this is going to be the easiest way to burn those extra calories. When you have this new fitbit goal you will also be more inclined to do that 20 min walk versus taking a cab.
2. Rent a Bike
If the place you’re visiting is too big to explore by foot, then rent a bike! This is another fun way to explore a new place while also staying active. Biking is such a fun activity and allows you to make random stops along the way and see more than if you were cabbing or taking a bus!
2. Do activities that will break a sweat!
Whenever I am traveling I make sure that the activities I’m doing are going to break a sweat! Whether its surfing, hiking climbing … find fun activities that will also double up as a fun workout.
3. Go for a run
Make sure you do this during the day and in areas you know are safe. But definitely get out there and explore a new place on foot! It’s a great feeling to run somewhere new and break a sweat. If available, run along beaches to increase the resistance and get an extra beautiful view.
5. Don’t be afraid to put time aside for working out
You can’t be going and exploring 24/7. Eventually you’re going to need some down time. If you have a gym available to you then hit that and if not create a little workout in your room. This is easier for girls than guys because for us it’s not AS important to have heavy weights available. Even though I am a big advocate of weight training for females it’s not crucial especially while traveling. So create a workout that is easy for you to do in your room!
Free Gym Memberships
Also, a little side tip…. in bigger cities you will likely be able to find gyms with free trials!
6. Bring Workout Clothes!
Sounds silly, but don’t forget to bring your running shoes and some workout clothes! Never let that be your excuse… plus seeing your workout clothes will remind you and motivate you to get out and break a sweat!
Swimming is an unbelievable workout! So next time you’re at the beach instead of laying there all day working on your tan… get in the water, have some fun and burn some calories!
