So I am currently in Iceland and having the absolute BEST time so far. This country is amazing, and if you are considering visiting, just do it! Pull the trigger and buy the ticket. I promise you won’t regret it. If you don’t have an amazing time, I’ll buy you a beer…. actually probably not because everything here is insanely expensive… but stillllllllll, just go! YOU. WILL. LOVE. IT.
If you are visiting Iceland, The Golden Circle is definitely a must do. Better yet, if you have a 24 hour layover in Iceland, I would say skip the blue lagoon and drive the Golden Circle instead. This mini road trip takes you through some beautiful terrain, with some amaaaaaaazing stops along the way. The drive itself is roughly 2.5-3 hours round trip but it took us about 7.5 hours by the time we made all of our stops and walked around. The following is a list of all the places we hit! Luckily, all these names you can pop into google maps and its VERY easy to navigate (its basically just straight down one main road with some stops along the way! Pretty simple stuff!)
So, here is the list of stops to make along the infamous Golden Circle!
This is the first stop along the Golden Circle! You’ll pull into a small parking lot off the main road. From there it’s a short 10 minute walk to the beautiful waterfall. There’s a little boardwalk in parts and the path is super clear, so don’t be worried about getting lost!
Geysers at Haukadlur
I honestly wasn’t the MOST excited about this stop when we first left for our little roadtrip, but it was a pleasant surprise!! They have dozens of geysers (which are formed from extremely hot water in the ground that boils up and has constant steam coming out of them… there’s way more science behind it… and as an Engineer, I should probably know it better.. but i don’t, so if you’re interested in learning more… check out Wikipedia. Loll) There’s one massive geyser in the middle that builds up so much pressure every 5 or so minutes that out of no where there is a huge massive explosion and the hot water shoots up something like 60-80 feet in the air.. its pretty wild.
This waterfall is just insanely massive. It has 3 separate tiers and viewing points all along it. It’s very cool looking at the waterfall against the amazing backdrop of moss-y greenery and grey rocks. There are quite a few amazing waterfalls in Iceland and this is one of the best.
Kerio Crater Lake
Ahhhhh I was so obsessed with this place!!! The crazy colours of the rock formation, and the way its shaped around this beautiful blue lake. Its so awesome. This stop charges unfortunately but its only 400isk which is $4.75 CAD sooo not that bad!! You start off at the top of the crater and have the option to walk all the way around. There are also stairs to go down to the lake… I recommend doing all the above. You’re only there once… don’t be lazy.
Stop to see the Horses!!!
I believe there are a couple farms along the way, BUT we found a spot just on the side of the road (there were other cars parked there) with horses that come right up to the fence for you to pet! So definitely keep an eye out for some cute horses to say hi to!
Make random stops along the way!
The drive itself is absolutely stunning (great drive for a GoPro time lapse), and you’re going to pass some amazing places along the way! Don’t be in a rush to get from place to place. If you see a cool looking street or a nice little look out, pull over and check it out! Be the one to find a cool new spot, or somewhere where you feel totally secluded! That’s what traveling is all about! Especially in Iceland!!!
